   On Heine's Poems
  
      -- Every Babylon
   "Not half so fearful in the wild,
   Avenging sea, or the sulking wood,
   As this our present neighborhood!"
   In jungles made of stone,
   In caves in wombs of buildings,
   You'll die if you're alone
   And follow lying feelings.
  
   The crowds in the east,
   The queues are to the west.
   Among them, hunting beast
   Secures devils' nest.
  
   It's City "as it is",
   And each is Babylon.
   It's hard to live in it.
   It's hard to be alone.
  
      -- The Daily Bread
   (the answer of the poor)
   "They ignore, since food is their only goal,
   The immorality of the soul"
   We, rats, are born
   To be the rats.
   In dirt and thorns,
   Rats are not pets.
  
   We, rats, are poor.
   We, rats, are gray.
   The life endures
   From day to grave.
  
   We, rats, are damned
   By wise and fat.
   We are condemned
   For being rats.
  
   But what is good
   Since we are gray?
   To pray for food,
   Or food to pray?
