JOHNNY DEPP has earned both critical and popular acclaim for his work in a variety of memorable roles in unique feature films. The actor recently starred in Tim Burton's hit film, Sleepy Hollow, co-starring Christina Ricci. The effort was his third collaboration with Burton.
New Line Cinema's The Astronaut's Wife in which he also starred was also released last fall. Another recent Depp film, released in 2000, was Roman Polanski's The Ninth Gate while The Man Who Cried was also released last year.
In 1998, Depp starred in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, which is based on the Hunter S. Thompson novel of the same name, with Benicio Del Torro and directed by Terry Gilliam.
Hailed as the "Best Actor" of his generation for his performance in Donnie Brasco, co-starring Al Pacino and directed by Mike Newell, Depp has also starred in Dead Man, a western set in the late 1800's directed by Jim Jarmusch.
In Don Juan DeMarco, Depp starred as a man convinced he is the world's greatest lover opposite legendary actors, Marlon Brando and Faye Dunaway.
It was his compelling performance in the title role of Tim Burton's Edward Scissorhands that established Depp as one of Hollywood's most sought-after talents and earned him a Best Actor Golden Globe nomination. He was honored with a second Golden Globe nomination for his portrayal in Benny & Joon, an off-beat love story in which he co-starred with Aidan Quinn and Mary Stuart Masterson. Depp was reunited with Burton for the critically acclaimed Ed Wood, the story of one of this country's most eccentric B-movie directors. His performance in this film garnered Depp his third Best Actor Golden Globe nomination.
Other films include What's Eating Gilbert Grape?, directed by Lasse Halstromm, which starred Depp in the title role, and Arizona Dream, directed by Emir Kusturica, in which he starred with Jerry Lewis and Faye Dunaway. He also starred in Nick of Time directed by John Badham.
The Kentucky-born actor grew up in Florida where he developed an early interest in music. Joining a rock band named Kids, Depp found considerable regional success, eventually following the group to Los Angeles.
When the band broke up shortly thereafter, he turned to acting on the advice of a friend. It wasn't long before Depp landed his first major acting job in Nightmare on Elm Street. He went to earn roles in several other films including Slow Burn and the Academy Award-winning Platoon. Depp then won the role that would prove to be his breakthrough, as undercover detective Tim Hanson on the popular Fox television show, 21 Jump Street. He starred on the series for four seasons before segueing to the big screen in the lead role of John Waters' Cry Baby.
Depp starred and made his feature directorial debut in The Brave, a film based on the novel by Gregory McDonald. Depp co-wrote the screenplay with his brother, D.P. Depp.

Based on Bruce Porter's non-fiction book of the same name, BLOW spans five decades of one man's journey from small town America to the jungles of Medellin, Colombia. George Jung (Depp) was the first American to partner with Colombian cartel leader, Pablo Escobar, to begin trafficking cocaine into the United States.
"I was looking for a story that was kind of off the beaten path," explains Director Ted Demme, whose previous efforts include The Ref, Life and Beautiful Girls. "I had read the book, `Blow,' five or six years ago. I was just amazed at what George Jung had been through in his life.
But, Demme is quick to point out that BLOW is not simply another drug movie. "It's also a heartbreaking love story between a father and a daughter. It's multi-layered, and that was what was exciting to me as a director.
The casting of Johnny Depp in the lead part added a new dimension to the project according to Joel Stillerman, long-time Demme producing partner.
"The key to the success of the role of George Jung was the subtlety and intelligence that an actor could bring to it. Somebody had to make him more than a drug dealer. And that's what Johnny Depp does. He brings a cerebral quality to his roles." says Stillerman.
Known for his eclectic acting choices, Depp's interest in the screenplay and project stemmed from visualizing a unique film character.
According to Depp, "He (George) just became a pirate, really. He didn't believe in the system or politics or rules or bosses. He just wanted to go out there and live."
While the story never strays far from Jung, an unusual circle of characters surround him throughout his mercurial journey. Demme was pleased to have the creative freedom to cast some talented, albeit unknown in the United States, actors in those parts.
For example, portraying Jung's wife, Mirtha, is Penelope Cruz. Recently seen in All the Pretty Horses, Cruz has made a strong impact into the American film marketplace after a successful career in her native Spain.
The tone of the film is set by the volatile dynamics between George and Mirtha Jung. Their intense emotional roller coaster ride serves as a parallel and centerpiece for the story.
Depp adds, "I think he saw Mirtha as this beautiful wild horse, but he couldn't quite get her to where he wanted her to be."
In his first American film, Molla's Diego is the pivotal person in transforming Jung from small-time marijuana drug dealer to the international cocaine trafficker.
Filming of BLOW was done in a variety of locations in Southern California as well as in Mexico. Executive producer Georgia Kacandes says, "It was a difficult film to schedule and shoot because it had so many different time periods. And since it was the story of a man's life, every scene was fairly brief which meant an incredible number of scenes to be shot."
Innovative production design by Michael Hanan required the locations to represent several different decades and numerous locales such as Massachusetts, Florida, Colombia, California, Mexico, upstate New York and Illinois.
The Mexican portion of filming was done in the state of Morelos and in Acapulco, showcasing some spectacular homes and ocean views.
The real George Jung sits in a prison cell in upstate New York. Without possibility of parole, Jung won't be released until 2015.
Depp acknowledges the responsibility that comes with portraying a real person, but also the responsibility of the filmmakers. "I knew Ted was committed to the film, but I didn't understand how deeply committed he was to the real George and the real Mirtha."
Because of the long gestation period of getting the project to the screen, Demme notes that he has become close with the actual George Jung. "Johnny would do something or I'll see a scene cut together and it reminds me that we are making a movie about a guy and his family," says the director.
In prison, Jung meets Diego Delgado (Jordi Molla), a talkative inmate who claims to be an insider in Colombia's rising drug trade. On the outside, Delgado introduces George Jung to Pablo Escobar (Cliff Curtis), the billionaire godfather of international cocaine trafficking, who has a plan to export tons of cocaine to American shores, bringing to the disco era to a far more expensive, addictive and hip form of high. Delgado also introduces Jung to a beautiful, self-indulgent party-girl named Mirtha (Penelope Cruz), who he marries. Ultimately, she gives birth to the greatest love of his life, his daughter Kristina Sunshine Jung.
With smart humor and probing detail, Blow outlines the lifestyle of a mega-rich smuggler the border crossings, the ruthless negotiations, the sudden betrayals, the wild characters, the run-ins with the justice system, the inherent problems in dealing with massive amounts of cash, the temptations and, ultimately, the tragedy of blowing all of your dreams for greed. Blow also stars Rachel Griffiths, Franka Potente, Paul Reubens and Ethan Suplee. The screenplay is by Nick Cassavetes and David McKenna.
