Panga
First of all the panga seria make an easy, pleasant reading. The critics do usually
make "easy reading" sound like a curse. But do consider - less, than a dozen modern
fantasy writers are able to write this way and than they don't always choose to do it.
The style reminds of the energetic retro-optimistic writings of Shumilov, Max Frei
and Eddings in Sparhawk series.
The main hero is former accountant; more recently - agent 007 in fakir disgues,
master mage and operator of talismans; currently - great mage and demiurg,
potential god. When Sir Sparhawk is proposed godhood - he refuses and retires.
When Sir Max reaches toward godhood, even without any reasonable control
of his powers - he grows out of his world just like Dodgson's Alice. After the merry
distruction of cople of "unlucky" peoples he acts more or less convinsingly only
in set ups, where he lucks his powers or they just don't really matter. Whatever
remains from Eho saves only but sending him away. Shumilov's dragons luckily
just don't wield such a power in their dayly lifes. Time travels, however treaten
to destroy this particular series, or transform 'em in something really differrent.
Faler for now refused proposed godhood, but without the finality of Sir
Sparhawk choice. He wields demigod powers with the easy of Sir Max - both
are born of the Russian postcommunist chaos and both demonstrate the unresistable
charm and glamor of "otmorozok", when looked upon by the friendly eyes. By the
end of the third book in panga series, Faler seems ready to add full size Armageddons
to his previous downscaled versions.
The internal setting of the world Panga itselve is layered, like onion. The most powerfull
creature is prince Akino. He is the builder of succession of more and more advanced
prototypes of heaven. He personnaly holds the keys to the last attempt - Edo, as a
kind of the modern st. Piter. He must be hated by these, he condemns to "hell", should
they ever discover, how the things really stand on Panga. His problems are that of a
god, who isn't abouve competition. His intellengence service is so througthully
corrupted on the top level, it would have to be partly shot, partly isolated and totally
replaced in our world, but in Edo after the "traumatic decapitation" successfull
recovery becomes an easy task. By the way, this "traumatic decapitation" of the
Fuller bosses speaks a volumes about the relations between the author and his own
bosses. Personally, I do usually find the real evil in organizations and mere unpleasant-
ness in their managers. The Edo's "Big Brother" Donovan are a really rosy picture...
More interesting by far is the multi-layered, multi-optional general set up of
Panga. The first impression forces you to exlude the possibility, that its just a
planet in some far away star system. Different laws of nature(magic and talis-
mans) and appearance of the "Earthlings" in orbitrary temporal order with a
centuries of dispersion(fellow from 22-th century preceeds by halve a millenia
some fellows from middle ages) make it look like a remote possibility indeed.
And than, just as you do start to invent the parrallel words with uncomparable
time flow(there seems to be ways to return the Earthling to the exact time-space
point of his departure by talisman or simple murder) and computer emmulation
of near supercivilization quality... the magic and talismans are discovered to be
foanded on nanotechnology around 23-th century. It doesn't in any way rule
out the computer emulation of Panga(PC game if you like), but adds the possi-
bility of the nanotechnological simulation of Panga and, to mix the things up -
every thinkable and probably unthinkable cross of emmulated and simulated
reality! Now Panga may phisically reside in computer, in desert sahara +
computer, on Marse + computer, etc. The parrallel world becomes unnesessary
and rules out by the Okkam's razor.
Now the system "god" shows himselve to Faler and propose to transfer his
"godhood". The unexplained offer is flatly if temporarily refuzed. Faler smells
a rat. In 19-th century this "anlitement" of Faler could be explained as the
proposition of the author to the main hero to take over the book. When the
characters aren't really flat, they do always fight the author for the control of
their destinies. If you forget to mention the heel business from the start, it may
become rather complicated matter to kill your Ahill convinsingly, to make the
model hero like sir Lancelot to betray his king, friend, and liage Lord. Just now
the major epic fantasy writer Robert Jordan undergoes such a defficalty with his
"Wheel of Time". The trio of main characters misbehaves outrageously. To marry
Mat Cauthon(the trikster for the god sake!) onto seanchan power, Jordan make
him take the princess as the hostage - tricky and time consuming combination, but
may be the only one to fit character. Now Mat's riding a lion - to be eated as he'll
let go. He'll marry her to save his life, but won't stop to look for the way out ever
after. Bound by the professies and unavoidable Last Battle(apocalipse) the author
tries to forse Perryn to creat the great western realm from a few crumbling king-
doms, but the fellow still haves problems with the Lord-General rank! As Perryn
is a true knight, his Lady's kidnapping may just do the trick. However the hero's
struggles against an author's will already stealed most of the fun out of some three
books of the "Wheel of Time". So the parrallel Jordan's plot seems to be in driving
the Dragon(Lewis Therin) Reborn - Rand al'Thor raving mad and make his madness
and power to smoof all possible inconsistenses.
But we are speaking about 21-st century literature. So the god is the MUD god
afterall. Is he a game dungeon muster? Moderator? Administrator? AI with a "temporal"
responsibilites in search for human replacement? Is all the project just a game for
childreen? Is it the model by near supercivilization of folk from its past in quest to
formulate some social laws? Or may be to choose the "worthies" for reincarnation?
Or a desperate attempt by the "orphaned" AIs to restore the people/cyborg civilization,
which destroyed itselve/were destroyed by the allien invasion/natural cataclizm/
conflict with the immerging computer intelligance? Is Faler close to the last comp's
constructor/owner/admin/etc. genetically/visually/spiritually or just fulfils some
rather abstract requarements? Please, do notice that the questions aren't really
technological, but rather historical...
After reading some "tehnomagic" books, all of a sudden I started to catch myselve
on the purely professional interest in the different descriptions of the magic. Now
I do see the magic just as an advanced tehnology interface! Exactly worded requests
and gestures already are the part of standard interfaces; the imagined colored beams
and threads may be the nearest feauture of the interface design.

Прежде всего, пангийский сериал - это лёгкое, приятное чтиво. В устах
критиков это обычно звучит как ругательство, но учтите - менее дюжины
современных писателей, работающих в жанрах НФ и фэнтази способны
так писать, да и они нередко стараются приблизится к тяжёлому слогу
мэйнстрима. То, как написана "Панга", напоминает ретро-оптимистичес-
кую "Дракониану" Шумилова, приключения сэра Макса, похождения сэра
Спархаука(Эддингс).

Очень интересен многослойный, неоднозначный, допускающий различ-
ные толкования общий сетап Панги. Первое впечатление как будто исклю-
чает тривиальную возможность, что это всего лишь планета другой
звёздной системы. Иные законы природы(магические и талисманные)
и "появление" Землян в произвольном временном порядке отодвигают
такое объяснение на задний план. А затем, когда вы уже начинаете
изобретать параллельные миры с несравнимым(несоизмеримым)
течением времени(похоже, существует возможность вернуть Землянина
в исходную точку пространственно временного континума до перемеще-
ния на Пангу с помощью талисмана или вульгарного убийства) и компью-
терные эмуляции(ВР), качество которых сделало бы честь и сверхцивили-
зации... выясняется, что магия и талисманы основаны на нанотехнологии
23 века(приблизительно). Это ни в коей мере не противоречит предполо-
жению о компьютерной эмуляции(ВР), но добавляет как возможность
на нанотехнологической(физической) основы Панги, так и любой мысли-
мой и немыслимой комбинации(этих возможностей). Теперь "Панга"
может располагаться в любых вычеслительных сетях и на н-ном числе
полигонов одновременно. Физическое расположение перестаёт быть
актуальным вопросом. Параллельные миры "отрезаются" бритвой Оккама,
в отличие от их "компьютерно-полигонной" эмуляции.
И вот "бог" системы являет свой светлый лик Фалеру и предлагает
ему свою "должность". Фалер временно отвергает подозрительное
предложение. В 19-ом веке это "просветление" Фалера могло бы быть
объяснено, как предложение автора главному герою... свободы действий.
Эдакая капитуляция на творческом фронте(разбор проблемы "своеволия"
литературных персонажей на примере Роберта Джордана).--//--
Но за окном - заря третьего тысячелетия от рождества Христова. Так что
бог видится типичным "богом" MUD(многопользовательской сетевой
игры). Мастер Игры, Модератор, Системный Администратор - зовите как
хотите. Это может быть, к примеру, ИскИн(AI) с временными полномочиями,
ищущий "полноценную" гуманоидную замену. А в чём смысл самого проекта?
Детская игрушка? Модель для изучения психологии и социологии? Или, скорее,
полигон для выбора и подготовки "достойных" к "реинкарнации". Быть может -
отчаянная попытка "осиротевшего" ИскИна восстановить цивилизацию людей/
киборгов, которая уничтожила себя/ была уничтожена в результате звёздных
войн/ природного катаклизма/ конфликта с зарождающимся ИскИном. Близок
ли Фалер к конструктору/ владельцу/ администратору сети / пр. генетически/
визуально/ духовно или просто отвечает каким-то абстрактным требованиям?
Характерно, эти вопросы имеют скорее историческое, чем техническое значение.
Так же, как и вопрос о статусе Фалера вне системы - рядовой сисадмин, диктатор,
бог, итд.
В четвёртой книге Фалер должен организовать очередной конец света. На этот
раз на Земле или её двойнике... После "Близнецов" это пахнет нарушением всех
норм политкорректности с одной стороны(в России это ещё не конец света :-) )
и чересчур очевидным предсказанием весьма близкого и весьма вероятного
будущего. Как автор сумеет избежать пошлости???
После прочтения книг о "техномагии" ловишь себя на чисто профессиональном
интересе к описанию различных систем магии. Магия видится, как итерфейс
продвинутой технологии, не более и не менее! Точные словесные формулировки
и жесты уже вошли в стандартные интерфейсы - очередь за более экзотическими
элементами.
