  William Hughes Mearns, 1875-1965
  better known as Hughes Mearns
  an American educator and poet.
  A graduate of Harvard University and
  the University of Pennsylvania,
  Mearns was a Professor at
  the Philadelphia School of Pedagogy from 1905 to 1920.
  Mearns is remembered now as the author of the poem "Antigonish"
  (or "The Little Man Who Wasn't There"),
  but his ideas, about encouraging the natural creativity of children,
  particularly those age 3 through 8, were novel at the time.
  It has been written about him that
  "He typed notes of their conversations;
  he learned how to make them forget there was an adult around;
  never asked them questions and never showed surprise
  no matter what they did or said."

  A poet has met a girl so nice and shy
  And asked politely, "Hi, how are you?"
  However, she said nothing in reply
  And how `is she, nobody knew.

  As I was sitting in my chair,
  I knew the bottom wasn't there,
  Nor legs nor back, but I just sat,
  Ignoring little things like that.

  ---

  Yesterday upon the stair
  I met a man who wasn't there.
  He wasn't there again today.
  Oh, how I wish he'd go away

  When I came home last night at three,
  The man was waiting there for me,
  But when I looked around the hall,
  I couldn't see him there at all!

  Go away, go away, don't you come back any more!
  Go away, go away, and please don't slam the door.

  Last night I saw upon the stair
  A little man who wasn't there.
  He wasn't there again today.
  Oh, how I wish he'd go away.

  ----------------

  Yesterday upon the stair,
  I met a man who wasn't there.
  He wasn't there again today,
  I think he's from the CIA.

  He's put a tap upon my phone,
  and listens when I'm not at home.
  He hears the things I do not say,
  Records my thoughts to earn his pay.

  I worry when he's not around,
  He might be hiding underground.
  Or somewhere else, I cannot say,
  I don't know where he is today!

  I fear he'll push me down the stair,
  Or stab my back or grab my hair.
  Oh, shadowy man from CIA,
  Won't you please just go away?

  No, wait, what's this? I think I hear
  The sound of footsteps in my ear.
  Oh, drat! He's here again today
  To follow me upon my way.

  He'll read these words I've left for you,
  And then you'll be his target too.
  But I'll escape - I know the way,
  I'll set my clock to yesterday!

  He'll fail to find me anywhere,
  Because, you see, I won't be there!
  He'll look for me upon my way,
  And disappointed be, but hey!

  You'll still be here, I fear it's true,
  He'll concentrate on watching you!
  He'll tap your phone this very day,
  And hear the words you do not say!

  So if you meet upon the stair
  A shadow man who isn't there,
  Beware, my friend, he's here to stay,
  For he's the Man from CIA.

  И за волосы ухватить;

  Поставлю время на вчера;

  Тогда меня он не найдёт;
  Пусть знает: я не идиот;
  Что отыскать меня не может;
