  King George I sent a regiment of horsemen to Oxford and
  at the same time donated a collection of books
  [Bishop of Ely's Library] to Cambridge.
  Dr. Joseph Trapp, the first professor of poetry at Oxford,
  wrote the following epigram:
  
  ---
  
  The King, observing with judicious eyes,
  The state of both his universities,
  To one he sent a regiment, for why?
  That learned body wanted loyalty;
  To the other he sent books, as well discerning,
  How much that loyal body wanted learning.

  the first professor of poetry at Oxford
  
  Joseph Trapp, 1679-1747
  an English clergyman, academic, poet and pamphleteer.
  His production as a younger man of occasional verse
  (some anonymous, or in Latin) and dramas led to his appointment
  as the first Oxford Professor of Poetry in 1708.
  Later his High Church opinions established him in preferment and position.
  As a poet he was not well thought of by contemporaries,
  with Jonathan Swift refusing a dinner in
  an unavailing attempt to avoid revising one of Trapp's poems, and
  Abel Evans making an epigram on his blank verse translation of the Aeneid
  with a reminder of the commandment against murder.

  Epigram, in reply to Dr. Joseph Trapp by
  Sir William Browne, 1692-1774
  who studied medicine at Cambridge,
  became an eminent physician and
  was elected President of the Royal College of Physicians in 1765.
  He kept a commonplace book from 1708 until 1774.
  He directed the engraving of the dies for a medal
  to be presented to Cambridge undergraduates for classical odes and epigrams.
  The first was awarded in 1775.
