J`AVAIS UN CAMARADE ♪
I
J`avais un camarade,
De meiller il n`en est pas.
Dans la paix et dans la guerre
Nous allions comme deux fréres.} Bis

II

Soyons toujours unis. } Bis

I HAD A TRUE COMPANION ♪
I
I had a true companion
The best of friends in need.
At war, at peace like a stanchion
He was for me indeed. } (Twice)

II
There a bullet whistled, which one of us be hit?
It`s him who`d bit the ground,
He lies there in dust clouds.
It breaks my heart indeed. } (Twice)

III
He wants to take my hand, but I`ve to load my gun,
Adieu, my dear fellow,
If under sun, in heaven
We`ll always be at one!} (Twice)

The song originates from one of the poems by a great German poet Johann Ludwig Uhland (1787-1862)
to the tune by a German composer Philipp Friedrich Silcher (1789-1860). In 1826 the poem was
rendered into Russian by Vasiliy Zhukovsky. There are at least two songs in Russian that develop
an iconic theme of `Ich hatt einen Kameraden`. They are "Служили два товарища" ("Вот пуля
пролетела, и товарищ мой упал") (1968) https://youtu.be/XQyg-8HO7AU and "Только он не
вернулся из боя" ("Друг, оставь покурить, а в ответ тишина")(1969)

In 1925 Uhland-Silcher`s song inspired W. Wallroth to write `Der kleine Trompeter`
https://youtu.be/lSSldL6dCJM that was translated by Mikhail Svetlov as "Маленький барабанщик"
https://youtu.be/iXdr9rYTBqw, and was known as `Camarada Hans Beimler`
https://youtu.be/Jm92WOtMmLU song in the Civil War of the 30s in Spain. By the way, `Horst
Wessel Lied` https://youtu.be/P80NfENi_jk also was inspired by Uhland-Silcher`s song. That
time it was no Nazi Party hymn yet, but a marching song of the SA men. They were the Leftists
rather than the Nazis and competed with the Rotfront, an equivalent of the SA but of the Communist
Party. They were sure that Hitler would establish the Soviet-type socialism in Germany. It was one
of the reason why Adolf Hitler destroyed them. If they only had known it! Their song was
misappropriated by the true Nazis, and due to this acquired rather sinister, ultranationalistic and
inhuman flavour. Returning to the original song `Ich hatt einen Kameraden` by Uhland-Silcher
there remain to add that it`s been Bundeswehr`s funeral song
