About the biography of Tiziano Vecelli and the Trojan finds of Schliemann. A drawing.

After reading the biographies of Sandro Botticelli, Albrecht Dürer and Raffaello Sanzio, I had doubts whether to read the biography of Tiziano Vecelli (known in English as Titian).

Can such a reading give something new? After getting acquainted with the biographies of Botticelli, Dürer, Raphael?

Nevertheless, I decided to read - to some extent out of interest in Venice.

Venice and Genoa actively competed with each other for a long time. If you get acquainted with history, it may seem that these two states are in some sense similar and equivalent.

Genoa was a prominent center of culture.

However, the close attention of the Venetian citizens to the glory of this republic - as a cultural center, - as well as the creative work of Titian and other prominent people in Venice, created Venice a unique historical and cultural reputation and secured a special place for it in world culture.

If we can learn about Sandro Botticelli and Albrecht Dürer from books written by Stanislav Zarnitsky (who, at the same time, gives the widest information about Florence, about Nuremberg), then about Raffaello Sanzio, about Rome, after reading the book of Alexander Makhov, we we can additionally to gather information by reading the book by Baldassare Castiglione, a close acquaintance (friend) of Rafael Santi (and also by reading the book by Giovanni Della Casa).

(To some extent, the biography of Botticelli was supplemented for me with materials from the Internet about the Florentine mosaic and the Medici family).

A biography of Titian is also written by Alexander Makhov. From this book, one can guess about the widest connections of Alexander Makhov with cultural figures in Italy, Venice, about his cooperation with The Ilya Glazuvov Russian Academy of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture [ headed by its rector, Academician I. S. Glazunov] (the Moscow).

The Venetian Republic - from the point of view of its internal structure and its atmosphere - appears in the initial chapters of Alexander Makhov's book as a mysterious social space with incomprehensible laws and rules.

The life path of Titian Vecellio differs significantly from the biographies of Botticelli and Raphael (aa well as Velasquez). Titian did not want to move from Venice - and lived an unusually long (about 100 years) and unusually successful life. Perhaps the atmosphere of Venice contributed to this.

The works of Titian to some extent allow you to look into the world of Venice.

Alexander Makhov's attention is focused on Titian - although he could not help but write about Venice in Titian's biography.

However, acquaintance with the first chapters of the book about Titian draws into the circle of attention of a reader the other Venetian artists - for example, Giorgione.

It would be nice to find an album with paintings by Giorgione.

Together with Giorgione's album, a series of albums under the general name "Art Gallery" from "De Agostini" LLC is found. These albums were issued since 2004 to 2008. In total, as materials from the Internet suggest, there are 200 albums.

(I also recall a series of relatively short biographies of great people - richly illustrated - also from De Agostini).

If the Art Gallery series (from De Agostini LLC) contains albums of paintings by Titian and Giorgione, then you can, at the same time, replenish your knowledge and familiarize yourself with the works of other Italian artists using this series.

After the Pastoral Concert (1510 [1509]) by Titian, the discussion around The Luncheon on the Grass, 1862 by Edouard Manet couse surprise ... Maybe not limited to albums of works by Italian artists?

The sites - meanwhile - suggest other books that might be of interest to the reader.

For example, "History of art of all times and peoples. Volume 1" by Karl Woermann (he worked for a long time as the director of the Dresden Gallery). In this book, the phrase is found: "vases were found by Schliemann in the second and third layers of Hisarlik and donated by this researcher to The Ethnological Museum of Berlin." [unofficial translation]

Does The Ethnological Museum of Berlin still function? Does Museum demonstrate artifacts donated by Heinrich Schliemann?

Reading of the biography of Titian written by Alexander Makhov continues... At an intermediate stage, other artists, other books are involved in the circle of attention... Along the way, questions arose about the vases (and other artifacts) donated by Heinrich Schliemann to The Ethnological Museum of Berlin, about the fate of Schliemann's Trojan finds...
