Bezymeno and Kromy. An essay on geographical and historical associations.

Bezymeno and Kromy. An essay on geographical and historical associations.

At first glance, there is nothing interesting in the name "Bezymeno": "Bezymeno" is probably a village without a name.

Still, it's strange - why is it without a name, and why has the absence of a name become a name?

We direct attention to the Explanatory Dictionary by Vladimir Dal.

The dictionary offers several meanings that draw our attention.

"АНОНИМ, ANONYMOUS ... bezymenka ... unnamed writer; ... Anonymous letter, untitled, unsigned.

БЕЗЫМЕННИК, BEZIMENNIK, who is without property, having nothing, poor...

БЕЗЫМЕННЫЙ, Bezymenny, to whom or what is not given a name, name, nickname; unnamed; whose name or nickname is unknown, who himself did not disclose it. ... anonymous letter... ... sib. vagabond, Ivan the forgetful... Bezymen ... ghost, a double, a doppelgänger; Bezymen according to popular belief, resembles a person in everything, but, due to impersonality, wears a mask, but he does not have his own face.

ПАСКВИЛЬ, LABEL, anonymous swearing letter, slanderous writing, inscription; nailed somewhere, or a sheet sent out, with an abusive, mockery without name of the author. A libel.

...a letter without name of the author, denunciation .... ". [unofficial translation]

Kromy comes to mind - the settlement that we mentioned in the essay about the city of Kramatorsk:

"Kromy is an urban-type settlement in the Oryol oblast of Russia, the administrative center of the Kromsky district. In the Time of Troubles, the Kroms, located on the way from Seversk land (the starting point of a series of uprisings) to Moscow, played an important role. In 1605, supporters of False Dmitry I held the defense in Kromy, who, under the leadership of Ataman A. Korela, withstood the siege of the troops of Mstislavsky, Sheremetev and Shuisky". [unofficial translation]

Vladimir Dal: "БЕЗЫМЕННЫЙ, Bezymenny... a double, a doppelgänger..."

With the geographical proximity of the Belgorod and Oryol regions, does the name "Bezymeno" have anything to do with the times of False Dmitry? Is his origin connected with the Time of Troubles?

In the Time of Troubles, a libel could also appear in the settlement ("Безыменное письмо, A letter without name of the author, anonymous.", "ПАСКВИЛЬ, LABEL - swearing letter without name of the author, derogatory writing, inscription"; when the majority of the population was illiterate and poorly versed in politics, the appearance of such a "document" was an event.

So, we assume that the name "Bezymeno" is associated with the so-called Time of Troubles.

["Bezymeno" is a village in the Graivoronsky district of the Belgorod region, the center of the Bezymensky rural settlement. The development of the village is stretched from the southeast to the northwest along the small river Bezymyanka, the left tributary of the Vorskla. In the 1800s of the Grayvoronsky volost of the Grayvoronsky district, the "Khutor Bezymenny" was 12 versts from the county town. A few years before the abolition of serfdom, three families of state peasants settled from the village of Podol to the fertile lands located near the Bezymyanka River. These were the Yurchenko, Pashchenko and Gotkalo families. In 1862, the farm consisted of 52 households, in which 515 people lived. The farm was called Bezymyanny."] [unofficial translation] (The existence of the Bezymenka River does not refute our version, the river could get its name from the settlement. In general, from "Khutor Bezymenny" to "Bezymeno" is a very large "distance" ... Why not to use further "Bezymenny" ["nameless"]? A simple, clear name. How did "Bezymenny" turn into "Bezymeno"? Yes, the version we put forward is valid, it has a right for existance ...).
