The God's things are of a great cost, the demon's values are cheap. The meaning of words on Kosti-NF. A story.

Mr. Wintertund, the second deputy general director of the Kosti-NF radio station, was sitting in his office and thinking about the problems of his native radio station.

He dialed the phone number of Mrs. Quicktalker, the head of the intellectual borrowing department.

  - 'Listen, you noticed that he often places an explanation after the text of the miniature (in English). Let's say a proverb is used in the text. He gives an explanation behind the text: a Russian proverb. It sounds like this in Russian, if translated into English it looks like this, the meaning is so and so.'

  - 'Sure! We are going to take a dictionary of Latin expressions and distribute it among our staff - who are speaking on the air. They will use Latin expressions. We will make separate inserts between large programs. We'll explain. It's a Latin expression, and it means such things.'

  - 'How will it look like?!'

  - 'For example, Iron Man said in one of the radio programs: "Sic transit gloria mundi!"

We give a quote from him. We give radio listeners to listen to his words.

Then we explain to radio listeners that "Sic transit gloria mundi!" is a Latin expression. Literally it means "Thus the worldly glory passes." And in a figurative sense, it means the transience of hopes and human achievements.

After that, we give a short history of this expression. This expression is a minor alteration of the text from the book by the German mystic philosopher Thomas Kempis's - the text from from his 1418 work The Imitation of Christ: "O quam cito transit gloria mundi" ("How quickly the glory of the world passes away"). These words sound like an exclamation during the ceremony of inauguration of the new Pope, before Pope a piece of cloth is burned three times - as a sign that everything earthly, including the power and glory he receives, is ghostly, changeable and perishable.

Everything - the title of the insert, the quote, the explanation, the history of the expression - takes no more than two minutes.

It seems to radio listeners that they have become more educated, that now they know more.

No cost is required from us. The initial idea is someone else's (we know whom's idea). A translation of Latin expressions is available in the dictionary. Everyone is happy. And the main thing is the safe borrowing of the idea - no one can formally hold us accountable. And we ourselves do not admit that we have taken something from other people's ideas! We are "in the plus" - we are reworking someone else's idea, without any payment in favour of author. No payment either in form of a positive, useful (for author of idea) mention on the air, nor in form of cash. Then, we take the information from the dictionary! Also free. It's pure profit!'

  - 'Not! This variant is not suitable for us!'

  Quicktalker fell silent in confusion.

  - 'We may be confused in these Latin expressions. Employees are overwhelmed. Have you read the opinion of a psychologist (he is a Ph.D.!) on the mental illness of one of our employees? With the Latin language we will read psychiatric diagnoses instead of a dictionary!'

  - 'What do you recommend?' - Quicktalker asked quickly.

  - 'Don't bother with Latin and translations. Even if you have a dictionary. Pretend to be wise persons! We know everything! We teach you and explain to you!'

  - 'How can it look?'

  - 'Let's say one of our commentators calls "demons" the people protesting against the destruction of a green park in the center of a big city: "These demons demand the cancellation of the decision!"'

First the title of the insert: "The meaning of words (on Kosti-NF)!" Then you give a quote with "demons" on the air. Then, an explanation: "Person, full of demons" - in a figurative sense, he is a madman, mad, lost his mind. The word "demons" is used in proverbs, for example: "If a sick person is being treated, a healthy person could to show the demonis mood", "Against a demon with a cross, and against a pig with a pestle (pistil) [to defend]."

  All is clear?'

  - 'We will try!'

  - 'Go ahead!'

Mr. Wintertund turned on the radio. "The demon is strong: he rocks the mountains, and he shakes the people as if they are brooms."

He crossed himself just in case. "A short prayer "Our Father", that is, the Lord's Prayer, - this prayer may to save." "You are not able to push off away a demon (only) with (the help of) Amen."

Mr. Wintertund sighed, turned off the radio and decided to walk through his native radio station to see how things were going.

  [Explanation:

  (1) Богово дорого, бесово дешево. (The God's things are of a great cost, the demon's values are cheap.),

  (2) "Больной лечится, здоровый бесится" ("If a sick person is being treated, a healthy person could to show the demonis mood."),

  (3) "От беса крестом, а от свиньи пестом" ("Against a demon with a cross, and against a pig with a pestle (pistil) [to defend]."),

  (4) "Силен бес: и горами качает, а людьми, что вениками, трясет" ("The demon is strong: he rocks the mountains, and he shakes the people as if they are brooms."),

  (5) "Коротка молитва "Отче наш", да спасает [от бесов]" ("A short prayer "Our Father", that is, the Lord's Prayer, - this prayer may to save [from demons]."),

  (6) "Аминем беса не отшибешь" ("You are not able to push off away a demon (only) with (the help of) Amen.").
