Tretyakov. Marshal and patron of Russian fine art. A note on chapters 4-12 of of Leo Anisov's book "Tretyakov"

Pavel Mikhailovich Tretyakov can be called (1) the marshal [of artistic sphere] and (2) the patron (philanthropist) of Russian fine art.

In the essay 'Vissarion Belinsky. Literary marshal. Literary theorist. Literary patron' we explained in what sense we use the word 'marshal'.

The term 'marshal' is used in this case to a greater extent in the American (common, citizen-wide) meaning (person responsible for order [for a good situation]; main, leading person; trustee) than in French (military) (head of large military units).

In chapters 4-12 of the book "Tretyakov" by Leo Anisov we find a lot of information. This information is not always directly related to Pavel Tretyakov ...

So what can a reader to know, to find?

A separate, interesting story is about the personal, family life of Pavel Tretyakov. The epidemics (pandemics) that visited Russia are mentioned (seems, there was no coronavirus at that time).

Pavel Mikhailovich Tretyakov turns into a philanthropist (patron).

He clarifies, specifies own purposes - as a collector and founder of an art gallery: special attention is paid to portraits of figures of Russian culture.

The author of the book provides a reader with the opportunity to get acquainted with a kind of boiler in which Russian artists (who were modern to Pavel Tretyakov) were rotating and were cooked ...

Vasily Perov ... Ivan Kramskoi ... Nikolai Ge ... Viktor Vasnetsov ... Vasily Surikov ...

(Maybe there are standards - what volume of a book should be? ...)

Help from Pavel Mikhailovich Tretyakov - in various forms - to people of art.

The author of the book "Tretyakov" talks about Dostoevsky ... about Leo Tolstoy ...

Relations of Pavel Mikhailovich Tretyakov with Emperor Alexander the Third.

"More than one and a half hundred paintings totaled the collection of Pavel Tretyakov by 1872. There were a lot of people who wanted to watch the gallery. Pavel Mikhailovich himself showed for especially dear guests his collection, feared strangers, and when outsiders came, Vera Nikolaevna [wife] talked about the paintings. Members of family knew the history of acquiring every painting." (Leo Anisov "Tretyakov")

'In March 1874, the gallery building was rebuilt and the placing of paintings began. (...)

And in the morning, a with little light, he calls [demands] again:
  - No, hang her back [as it was earlier], it will be better. I saw in a dream that it [painting] was already hanging there, and I liked it.

Sometimes in the middle of the night with a candle in his hands he went around the halls and looked at thermometers. Especially on winter days. He made the efforts, that the pictures "would not be captured by cold."
To everyone's surprise, he was affectionately attached to his gallery - as if to a living being. It caused a special respect. ' (Leo Anisov "Tretyakov")

Kinship (related relations) with Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky.

"The Moscow City Duma, having discussed the statement of Pavel Tretyakov, adopted a resolution on September 15, 1893, according to which the" donation... " was decided to be accepted in size and on the terms set out by Pavel Tretyakov. It was also decided to express deep gratitude to Pavel Mikhailovich and his nephew Nikolai Sergeyevich for their donations to the city of Moscow. " (Leo Anisov "Tretyakov")

"The gallery opened on August 15, 1893. "As for the opening of the gallery, it was opened as solemnly as not one of the city institutions was opened, namely: on the day of the gallery's transition to the city ownership it was fortunate with the visit of the emperor with his whole august family," wrote Pavel Tretyakov to Vladimir Stasov later. " (Leo Anisov "Tretyakov")

The acquisition of icons. ('Strongly changed externally and internally, Konstantin Apollonovich [Savitsky] brought to Russia three paintings painted the same year that he was left without a wife. One of them, 'Meeting the Icon', amazed everyone. It was a great success at the exhibition of the Wanderers [exhibition of Peredvizhniki, of the Itinerants]. Pavel Mikhailovich [Tretyakov] immediately bought it ['Meeting the Icon'].' (Leo Anisov 'Tretyakov ')

'On the day of death, December 4, 1898 ... asked the head priest of the church of St. Nicholas in Tolmachi to organize confession... with ... tension and strength, he was repeating:' I believe, believe, believe! '' (Leo Anisov "Tretyakov").

'I won't give you any information about myself, because I really don't like it when something is printed about me.' (Pavel Tretyakov, August 30, 1892. - The quote from the book by Leo Anisov "Tretyakov").
